Broadcast control channel (BCCH)

1. Downlink -> Uplink
2. Normal Burst
3. BCCH Occur in timeslot 0 of some specific carriers known as BCCH carriers
4. After locking on to the frequency and frame structure in the cell, MS needs some more general information broadcast on the BCCH for call setup purposes
  • Cell Identity (CI)
  • Network Identity (LAI)
  • Control Channel structure
  • BCCH Frequencies of neighboring cells
  • GPRS Supported or not.

  1. A base station Broadcast Control Channel constantly transmits identifying information around its cell site. Things like its network identifying which wireless carrier owns it, the area code for the current location, either frequency hopping is used, and information on surrounding cells. All substantial facts to allow the base station know a mobile is activated and wants service. Again, the BCCH is not a dedicated radio frequency. It is rather a channel within the bit stream carried by any of the frequencies in a cell.
